Composing and Editing in Federated Wiki

The basic elements of a Federated Wiki page are text paragraphs, images, videos, headers, page dividers, and links either to other pages in Federated Wiki or to external webpages.

Read first: Understanding the Factory and Understanding the Journal

Open up the Factory, and double click on the Factory pane. This will open a Text Editor box. Write in the box. When you're done, click outside the box or hit return.

Keep doing this until you're familiar with how to create paragraphs.

To edit a paragraph, double click anywhere in the paragraph and the Text Editor will open up again.

To delete a paragraph, double click anywhere in the paragraph, and remove all the content from the Text Editor. Click outside the box when you're done.

To break up a long paragraph, double click anywhere in the paragraph and hit return where you want the paragraph to break.

Headers and page dividers are visual aids to help the reader. Access these through the list of plugins in the Factory.

To write header text, click on the Markdown link, and in the text box, write ## followed by your header text. Click outside the box when you're done. If you want to see what this looks like, double click on any of the headers on this page.

To add a page divider, click on the PageFold link and in the text box, write the word or words you want to appear embedded in the pale grey line. Click outside the box when you're done. To see what this looks like, double click on the page divider below this paragraph.

Use a page divider to separate text from discussion, or to begin and end a quote.

Plain text is best in Federated Wiki but you can click on html in the Factory and this will open up a Text Editor that accepts html.

Any of the page elements—including headers and page dividers—can be dragged around. Images will stay on the right hand side and text will wrap around them. To see how this works, try moving the elements of this page around. Don't worry, you can always put them back.

To add an image, open up the Factory and drag an image onto the Factory pane. Drop it in, and the image will appear on your page. Click on the caption to edit it.

From time to time, and for reasons that are not always understandable, elements may appear that can be difficult to remove.

At your starting point in Fedwiki, you probably have a page where you record the pages you create. It's a good idea to create your own Scratch page (in the usual way with double square brackets). If you open up fedwiki in a new window, and find the scratch page, you can drag it over to the first window by grabbing the avatar of the page.
